Biographie

Mené par le clarinettiste et saxophoniste Shabaka Hutchings, le groupe britannique Sons of Kemet agrège à son jazz des influences africaines et caribéennes. Né à Londres, Hutchings grandit à Birmingham puis à la Barbade où il apprend à jouer de la clarinette. De retour dans la capitale anglaise à l'âge de neuf ans, il intègre le programme de soutien aux jeunes musiciens Tomorrow's Warriors et forme en 2011, avec le joueur de tuba Oren Marshall, le batteur/producteur Sebastian Rochford et le percussionniste Tom Skinner, le groupe Sons of Kemet, dont le jazz se nourrit de rythmes afro-caribéens sur l'album Burn (2013), récompensé par un MOBO Award. Parallèlement à l'autre projet Shabaka & the Ancestors et à sa participation au sein de The Comet Is Coming, Shabaka Hutchings renoue avec Sons of Kemet sans Marshall, remplacé par Theon Cross sur l'album Lest We Forget What We Came Here to Do (2015), auquel participe le nouveau percussionniste Eddie Hick. Dédié à la communauté caribéenne qui a émigré en Angleterre dans les années 1950, le disque est mentionné comme le précédent dans la liste des albums de l'année sélectionnés par l'influent DJ Gilles Peterson. Le groupe réduit à Hutchings, Cross, Hick et Skinner après le départ de Marshall, invite notamment Moses Boyd et Josh Idehen sur son troisième album Your Queen Is a Reptile (2018), publié sous la prestigieuse étiquette Impulse!, dédié à de grandes figures féminines et nommé au Mercury Prize. En 2021, le quatrième album aux couleurs afro-jazz Black to the Future accueille les vocalistes Kojey Radical, Angel Bat Dawid, Mother Moor et D Double E, les saxophonistes Cassie Kinoshi et Kebbi Williams, le trompettiste Ife Ogunjobi et le tromboniste Nathaniel Cross.

Led by hornsman Shabaka Hutchings, experimental jazz group Sons of Kemet make a clattering, messy carnival of sound that explores the spread of music from Africa into contemporary musical styles across the world.

Hutchings was born in London but moved to his parents' homeland of Barbados at the age of six and after picking up the clarinet, returned to England at 16 and studied at the Guildhall School of Music cutting his teeth on the UK jazz scene working with greats like Courtney Pine and Herbie Hancock and groups Melt Yourself Down and Zed-U. He recruited Polar Bear drummer Seb Rochford, tuba player Oren Marshall and percussionist Tom Skinner to form the band in 2011 and took the moniker Sons of Kemet (an ancient name for Egypt) as a reference to the birth place of many musical ideas. Their energetic, free-form grooves and relentless, infectious rhythms made debut 'Burn' one of the most acclaimed albums of 2013 and Hutchings' colourful, sprawling sax lines helped cross the genres of jazz, experimental and world music.

They won the MOBO Award for Best Jazz Act in 2013 and producers such as Micachu and Vince Vella remixed their work, before follow-up 'Lest We Forget What We Came Here to Do' paid tribute to the Caribbean community which had emigrated to Britain in the 1950s and the music that they brought with them. Theon Cross replaced Marshall in the band but they continued to meld the sounds of West African drummers with New Orleans Mardi Gras celebrations, Trinidadian soca melodies and Sun Ra's psychy, spacey sprawl on new album 'Your Queen Is a Reptile' in 2018.
